First off this is NOT a replacement for a real drumkit. It’s more of a portable mini kit to take around with you where you want. Much like a guitarist’s mini backpack guitar. The built in speakers do the job but if you want better sound, plug in to an external audio source. IT has 50 preset drum kits and 100 play along songs in a range of styles which can be fun to practice to. The kit samples are decent. And there is a nice mix of styles to choose. The pads look sturdy, not sure how they’ll hold up over time but we’ll see.
The sensitivity can be adjusted to 3 levels 0-1-2. Frankly I didnt notice a whole lot of difference between mode 0 and mode 1 but mode 2 I did notice a slightly more responsive hit when I tapped the pads. If purchasing this i’d consider getting soft tip lightweight sticks or maybe rigging a pair with foam on the tips to preserve the pads and prevent banging up the unit.
The layout of the kit is much better then the dd-55. When playing it I tilt it slightly clockwise so the right bottom end points in between my legs, feels very natural. The pedals provided are not the best but you can upgrade to better full size electronic pedals if you like. But for the purpose I use it for, the provided pedals are just fine. There is a hand percussion mode which when activated brings up the bongo and conga kit. You can then play with your hands which is a nice add on feature.
Im giving it a 4. If it had better sounding speakers and better pedals id give it a five. If you’re just starting out i’d recommend getting a full size acoustic or electric kit. But if you know how to play and want a compact light weight mini kit to tote around to friends houses, this is the perfect solution.

Good for beginners and practical - David in the suburbs - LA suburb, CA
As noted in a previous review, this product is GREAT for that.
The layout of the drum pads is great, the fact that you have 8 pads and 2 pedals is great unlike more intermediate products such as from Alesis and Roland which have 8 pads 4×2 pads. The songs you can play along with is just ok, there’s something like 10 songs for each genre of music, rock pop ballads jazz latin, etc. Only 5 or so appealed to me. There are songs and current ones too you can download from yamaha but they seem pretty pricey. what’s not as great is the percussion sound from the pedal. If the bass drum and built in songs were just 50% better it’d be much more practical. for an adult I mean.
The 8 pads and layout is good for practicing (as opposed to buying separate drum pads from a music store which a drum suggested). The space saving is I guess good also though I hate to admit it and plus that the unit is tilted down towards you, i.e. it’s about a inch or 2 higher in the back so it’s angled towards you and more natural. The Alesis percussion pad or similar units are flat.

After getting completely frustrated with the quality of cheaper electronic drums sold off the shelf at most department/toy stores I looked into a higher quality kit for my 8 yr old daughter.
This is a great set. Many different realistic drum sounds/kits, velocity sensitive pads, pedals, and more features for us to discover and grow into. Check out some videos on youtube to see how amazing the sound and responsiveness is. My daughter loves it! I also considered a real drum set at this price range, but they take up too much room and don’t compare to the number of drums/sounds on this machine. I recommend getting a snare stand to hold it. That’s our next purchase.
Don’t waste your money on the cheap stuff. Nothing else compares to this set at this price range.

The drum machine is fun to play, and with the two foot pedals, I can pretend I’m playing a real drumset. I enjoy having all 100 sample songs to play along with, and I like being able to choose which parts play (drum 1, drum 2, bass, and backing). My only gripe with the sample songs is that while there are plenty of examples of rock music, there are not enough (or no) examples of some other types of music (folk, blues, alternative).
The drum pads do not always trigger if you hit them too lightly. I would expect them to play very quietly if you hit them softly, but you have to hit them fairly hard to make a sound. There is a way to adjust the sensitivity, but even with the highest sensitivity, it is not sensitive enough for me.
Also, the bass drum pedal has no sensitivity at all. No matter how hard or soft you kick it, it plays the same volume.
The Yamaha DD50AD touch-sensitive digital drums enable you to practice or play anywhere with the full set of drummer’s tools at your fingertips. Features like 4 large and 3 small touch-sensitive drum pads, 75 assignable PCM voices, 100 PCM rhythm styles, and 20 pre-programmed and 1 programmable percussion sets ensure you will be driving beats that fully express your creativity.
The Yamaha DD50AD helps you master any percussion style at the tempo you choose. The two foot switches for high hat and bass make it a true drumming experience. An easy-to-read LED display and enhanced buttons and dials make for a very user-friendly interface. General MIDI compatibility and MIDI in/out ports mean you can hook the drums up to your PC for some serious music producing. A set of drumsticks and headphone jacks are included. The machine can be powered by the Yamaha AC adapter, which is also included. This unit comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Brought me back to drums - Michael D. Moss - West of the Rio Grande
I had played drums all my life and had been on the road as a pro when I was younger. I hadnt played for a long time as it was too much hassle and took up too much room to set up real drums. I saw a set of these at Sam’s and bought them. I set it up on an old snare stand in the corner of the bedroom and started playing them regularly. Soon I got better pedals and an Alesis D4 and MIDI connected these to it and before long I got an entire set up of electronic drums and now I am back playing and recording and loving it. All thanks to a little old Yamaha DD50!
I can make it better! - Mick West - Essex, England
I recently purchased a DD50 from ebay - and it was about what I expected. Yamaha make generally good trusty products - but this kit has the same basic flaw as all electronic druma I have tried - that is - the pads do not pick up light strokes - and also don’t respond to heavy hits. In other words they don’t react anything like real drums.
Ok this is a very cheap unit so you get what you pay for right? - well actually - I did design and market electronic drums (analogue type) back in the eighties - and I spent a long time working on this “response” thing - eventually getting very impressive results.
So when I got the DD50 recently I immediately set about improving things - and I have devised a fairly simple way of improving the response drastically with a bit of add-on circuitry.

Yamaha digital drums kids toys - Scott Sheeran - utah
When I first tried out my new drum set, I was pretty happy. However, after about thirty hours or so of use the power wouldn’t stay on, making jam sessions real hard. The repair shop wanted to charge me the same amount as a new unit to fix it. When I contacted Yamaha directly, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me, saying that the unit was seven years old. When I pointed out the unit was purchased only two months previous, they reiterated it was seven years old. These things are only good for kids toys or someone that just wants to fiddle around, not a serious musician. Due to the callous response I recieved from Yamaha, I will never purchase another product of any kind from this manufacturor again

My last electronic drum kit was another brand and was a disappointment. This time I spent a lot of time deciding on what drum kit I was going to get and settled on the Yamaha DTXPRESS IV Special because of the real high hat, the cymbals and the variety of sounds from the drum module. I also prefer the rubber heads instead of the mesh heads from my previous kit. I have had this kit for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it! Everything is high quality and works perfectly. I also recommend getting the MS50DR stereo monitor system, which mounts on the drum rack to hear your drums in stereo when you want to play without the headphones. I love this drum kit and I can’t stop talking about it!

What i like about electronic drums is that you can play loud without disturbing the whole neighborhood, you don’t need to tune the drums, you have a big range of sounds and the best is that you can customize your drum set (for example you can make them all snares). i use 2 snares that i hit together, 4 crash cymbals, 1 ride, 1 hard hat and 1 kick, about the tom tom i like to use Yamaha keyboards.
